Star Moss (Syntrychia and similar species)

Syntrychias is also known as Screw moss, it's a member of the Pottiales family but, here at Moss Clerks, we call it Star moss on account that they look like sweet little stars. It's called screw moss as when it drys out it tightly screws or twists up often becoming a dull brown/dark orange. A second look at it you'd think it would be dead but, with a good misting with a spray bottle, You'll see it burst back to life, double in size and regain its vivid colours of green, yellowy green, golden brown, and orange within a matter of seconds. A common moss but seldom has capsules

Forms in loose clumps up to 1-3 cm tall can be quite a crumbly moss making it easy to tweeze into sandy substrates. It can be cut up and propagated incredibly easily, could do well in DIY "Moss milkshakes"

Likes sun, periods of drought, sandy substrates, likes textured rocks and slate to grow on. Can tolerate a lot of direct Sun needs a light misting in the evenings if outside and it has been a particularly hot dry and sunny day during summer months

Dislikes being on wet substrates/soil (tends to rot)
