The British Isles has 977 known bryophytes, hundreds of which are mosses that form to grow like carpets. Many look similar to each other at different stages of growth in their life cycle. Carpet forming types consist of over hundreds and hundreds of species in the UK, Some of them can only be distinguished by using a microscope, and others are very obvious to ID.

All mosses form colonies. These carpet forming ones that grow together in a way where they knit together, forming a carpet that will get thicker over time with sporophytes releasing their spores. These types of growers are called Pleurocarp mosses. These specifically grow "outwards" compared to Acrocarp, where they grow "upwards" so it holds well together and can be easily torn to the desired shape. They have wide variable colours from deep emerald green and green to a yellow-green gold hue.

With such a wide variety of low growing carpet forming mosses, we're keeping it simple by naming our carpet types "Hypnales" as in the taxonomy order. The most common ones we sell are as pictured.

Cypress plait - Hypnum cupressiforme
Neat feather - Pseudoscleropodium purum
silky wall feather - Homalothecium sericeum
Rough feather - Brachythecium rutabulum

You shall receive one or some of these of various sizes in your pack, or If you want a specific type, please let us know, and we can get you the Moss you need.

These are suitable for most conditions and favours bright indirect sunlight. However, it can handle periods of direct sunlight for some time. Hypnales enjoy 60-85% humidity and infrequent watering, as they can rot if overwatered and combined with poor airflow in terrariums. Dose well on all soils but prefers a Ph of 5-7.
When left to go dry, it can handle dormancy very well. Its colour may change but will revive itself once rewatered (we recommend distilled, spring or rainwater on a mist setting as moss leaves are so tiny. Hard tap water will give you issues)

Direct sunlight and walking on it whilst bone dry in a garden setting will damage it. We recommend stepping stones in high foot traffic areas. When you do walk on it, it's best to have low-track shoes. Carpet type  Mosses can handle foot traffic when humidity levels are ideal.

Hypnales are a great candidate for your Moss Smoothie as they grow quickly on most natural textured surfaces (smooth or plastic surfaces will not work, they will grow but fall off so easily)
